Head Turn

I have been struggling a little to understand timing charts, so I set out to create a simple animation with the intention of learning how a timing chart works.

This little animation has 17 frames of actual movement, which I broke down with an ease in and an ease out, in order to make the movement more smooth and natural.

It was fascinating to use the timing chart, as I realised it allowed me to get all my thinking done before starting the animation, being able to focus all my energy on drawing to the best of my ability.

I feel like it was a step forward in my work, where I will look back and think, “how on earth did I possibly animate without a timing chart??”

This also got me used to flipping between my drawings in order to see the action, rather than relying solely on onion skinning. I felt this really allowed me to understand my drawings, and the motion going on, in a way that onion skins don’t.

Using what I have learnt with this animation, I see how it is possible to create larger scenes, and break it all down using the timing charts, so that you can focus on one drawing at a time.
